Catholics 💙 Foster

Presented by Kathleen Domingo

Description: From our beginning, Catholics have followed the call to care for “widows and orphans”, expanding that call to all vulnerable persons. However, orphans have always held a special place in our hearts with communities of women religious founding orphanages for centuries and Catholic Charities and other ministries leading adoption programs and placing children with foster families. In recent years, Catholic organizations in many states have been forced out of the foster care business, but our parishes still have a great deal that they can do to care for children in the child welfare system and to develop parish families into foster families! Don’t let government regulations keep us from fulfilling our Gospel call to care for the most vulnerable! Learn how we can be fully Catholic while also working to help foster youth have strong, healthy families for life.

Partnerships between faith-based organizations, secular community organizations, and government agencies have been redefined with the experience of the pandemic.  Faith-based organizations can play a vital role in promoting well-being through intentional collaboration, while also advancing the mission of all agencies involved.
In this PDP, Mario will share his unique experience as a diocesan Marriage and Family Life leader who has partnered with various organizations to advance family life care. Some of these organizations are: The National Alliance for Relationship and Marriage Education, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Catholic Marriage Initiative Fund, Safe Harbor Catholic Counseling Institute, RAND Corporation, etc.

Kathleen Domingo serves as Executive Director of the California Catholic Conference.  She lobbies on behalf of the 12 Catholic dioceses in California, representing the bishops of California on issues such as human life and dignity, strong healthy families, racial justice, environmental justice, healthcare access, housing, restorative justice, educational excellence and religious liberty.

Kathleen served for eight years in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as Senior Director of the Office of Life, Justice and Peace. She led OneLife LA, created Respect Life Week, and built the first Caring for the Whole Person diocesan-based program in the nation. She is a national speaker, writer, and organizer, and regularly shares her insights and resources with dioceses and organizations around the country and internationally.

Kathleen holds a BS from the University of San Francisco as well as a Certificate from its St Ignatius Institute. She earned a Master’s degree in Theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family in Washington, DC. Most marriage ministers recognize the value of retreats for married couples as an opportunity for couples to “get away” and focus on strengthening their relationship with one another and with God. At the same time, the task of planning and administering such an experience can be daunting. Our April Professional Development Presentation will feature three panelists with extensive experience in providing retreats for couples. They will share their ideas on how to make these events happen, how to create meaningful experiences for couples and assessing the impact that these events have on couples’ relationships.

Teresita Johnson is the president and founder of Stella Maris Center which she founded in 2020. She is a marriage education specialist spending 10+ years training marriage ministry teams as well as overseeing numerous marriage preparation programs. She recently wrote Dearly Beloved: Launch a Lifetime of Love with Marriage Preparation to inspire and encourage engaged couples to fully embrace marriage education for a happy and holy marriage.

As far as her other professional experience, Tere worked for a decade in the broadcast news industry starting in radio news and then spent nearly a decade in the television news industry.

Tere’s formal training includes a Certificate in Marriage and Family Ministry from the Marriage and Family Institute, University of St. Thomas (CMF), a Masters of Arts in Pastoral Studies from the University of St. Thomas (MA PS) and a Bachelor of Arts Radio/Television, Journalism minor, from the University of Houston.

Jason Angelette is the father of five beautiful children. He and his beloved (late) wife Elise co-authored the marriage enrichment program United in Love, United in Christ, and planned and spoke at retreats nationwide during their thirteen years as co-directors of the Willwoods Community Faith & Marriage Apostolate.

Jason earned a Master of Theological Studies degree from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at the Catholic University of America. His experience includes high school campus ministry, teaching theology at the high school and college levels, Catholic podcasting, and co-hosting Faith and Marriage Today and several other monthly television series on WLAE.

Kelly Krapes is an experienced Parish Marriage and Family Coordinator. The importance of strong marriages for healthy families encouraged Kelly and colleagues from other local parishes to coordinate a yearly retreat, No Greater Love, that focuses on supporting marriages on a shoestring budget. Their eighth No Great Love retreat is planned for this fall.
