Preparing Our Children to Understand and Answer Tough Moral Questions

June 18, 2020 Call Recording

A generation ago, Christian parents didn’t have to worry about how to explain transgenderism to their nine-year-old, or help their teen deal with mockery at school for believing that marriage is between a man and woman. Today we have no choice but to equip our kids to understand and to own the truth about such issues– truth that used to be self-evident.

Leila will speak about her book Made This Way (co-authored with Trent Horn of Catholic Answers), which offers parents, grandparents, teachers, and youth leaders crucial tools and techniques to form children with the understanding they need, always appropriate to their age and maturity level and in accordance with Church directives.

The secret to teaching effectively lies in an approach that begins not with the Bible or Church teaching–as crucial as those are–but with the Natural Law, the secret weapon that the Church has used for millennia to teach the moral law, but which has been shelved in past decades. The nature of male and female, and the nature of human sexuality, must make sense to a child or teen,or they will go with what the culture teaches. If we’re not teaching our children how to understand tough moral issues, then the world will.

Leila’s talk will seek to address these problems and how to reach children with the truth.

Teen STAR: Empowering Our Young People to Make Better Decisions

Date:  April 16, 2020

Listen to Presentation

Intro to Teen STAR PDF

Teen STAR is a curricular program that teaches young people about sexuality and affectivity.  When adolescents and young adults learn about their bodies and fertility in conjunction with principals of Natural Law and the teachings of Human Vitae and the Theology of the Body, they learn to appreciate and value what has been given to them, to make better decisions about how to use these gifts and become integrated human beings:  balancing the physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and social aspects of their lives.

Teen STAR’s pedagogy is based on a Personalistic model of accompaniment, a “walking with” the young person through their experiences.  They are encouraged to “discover” their inherent value as children of God, using the Socrative method combined with presentations, activities (including interviewing their parents and grandparents) and videos that build on each other.
Girls learn how to chart their fertility in a basic way (we do not teach a method) and both boys and girls learn to chart their emotions to guide them as they are confronted with problems.
Teen STAR prepares Instructors to guide Youth Groups, Confirmation classes, home-school groups, etc.  The curriculum is age-appropriate to Middle School, High School, and Young Adults (called Holistic Sexuality).

Deacon Santiago Molina is the acting Executive Director of Teen STAR USA.
Deacon Santiago is originally from Argentina. Married to Laurie Molina for 32 years and with a daughter. He is Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Tallahassee Community College. He has been a permanent deacon since 2000. He has lived in Tallahassee, Florida since 1990.

Description:  Marc and his wife Erin struggled with infertility for years, then unexpectedly found themselves pregnant after arranging to adopt.  Having heard many similar stories, he ended up researching factors that affect the emotional and psychological health of couples who struggle to conceive. From the research, he developed a roadmap to help them improve their chances to overcome infertility, but more importantly to live happier and healthier marriages.

Presenter:   Marc Sherman

Bio: Marc Sherman founded Organic Conceptions after a 20-year career in corporate America. The idea came after he and his wife Erin struggled with infertility, decided to adopt and then unexpectedly found themselves pregnant. Realizing that this phenomenon occurs regularly, they decided to conduct the first ever research project to better understand the insights, patterns and commonalities from similar stories.

They partnered with Ph.D. Kate Webster and conducted a multi-year study that uncovered 9 key emotional transitions that were common across these stories.  The research has been turned into an online cognitive based program for women and couples designed to optimize their emotional health and well-being for conception.

They are the first organization to research, map and bring to life the emotional stages critical for conception. Their online program, The Journey to Parenthood & Beyond, helps couples identify, name, address, and overcome the suffering involved when struggling to conceive, resulting in healthier patients and better outcomes.

Marc, now a father of 3 children, Maxwell (14), Emerson (8) and Kennedy (6), dedicates himself to Organic Conceptions and is an advocate for couples to ensure they are being cared for both physically and emotionally.
